Natural play in Skanda Vale
Skanda Vale is an independent organisation, run by a growing team of dedicated volunteers.
It welcomes around 90,000 visitors each year from diverse ethnic backgrounds. It offers guidance, education, food and shelter to all, irrespective of belief, race or creed. It also strives to be a sanctuary for animals, as well as running a hospice caring for the terminally ill and their families.
Through a grant from Postcode Local Trust, Skanda Vale set out to transform half an acre of wasteland into a natural play space for children from inner cities (who very rarely spend time in nature) to explore, play, learn and connect. This space now includes a natural climbing structure, willow dome, zip wire and more. They utilised natural, sustainably sourced materials which blend into the valley landscape, working with the natural contours of the land. A point was made to use sensory and edible native planting to stimulate an interest in nature and encourage wildlife and biodiversity.
