Volunteers taking care of their local park in Portobello
The Friends of Figgate Park is a group of volunteers who all share a love of the park and its wildlife. They organise regular park clean-ups, as well as general gardening and planting days. They also offer activities for children to take part in and initiate conservation projects that the whole community can get involved with.
They received funding from Postcode Local Trust for their Fruity Corner project. The funding enabled the group to transform an unused area of the park into a rich biodiverse oasis, which has massively increased the variety of wildlife in the park.
The group noted that the large sum of funding allowed them to be ambitious in the planning and scope of the project.
They now have a beautiful community fruit garden and three large circular planters for edibles. As a result, more people in the community have been inspired to become part of the gardening group that tend to the area. This has forged friendships between local people who may not have otherwise met. In addition to this, they have a meeting space for volunteers and a natural outdoor classroom space that can be used by children and adults alike.
